About this deal

Her webcomic Heartstopper has been translated into several languages, and Oseman recently announced she’d sold its rights and that a TV show is on its way. The million copy bestseller, A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara, is an immensely powerful and heartbreaking novel of brotherly love and. I would still recommend this with my entire heart, and I feel like if you have been a part of “boy band culture” you will relate even more than I did.

The book explores the theme of fandom, idolization , fame , way we treat our idols, friendship , importance of friendship, layers of friendship, mental health, alcoholism, LGBTQIAP+ representation. The first-person perspective goes deep beneath the surface of what being a fan — and a member of a boyband — is really all about. This is a style of storytelling that tends to appeal to me somewhat less, and despite knowing this is the point, I admit to wishing for more. The author did not need to remind us of her being a Muslim constantly, the character was just a normal person living a normal life, she does her prayers and she did not want a guy to see her without a Hijab, but other than that she was just an ordinary person and Muslims are like that. A funny, wise and heartbreakingly true coming-of-age novel, I Was Born For This is a stunning reflection of modern teenage life, and the power of believing in something - especially yourself. But dreams don’t always turn out the way you think and when Jimmy and Angel are unexpectedly thrust together, they find out how strange and surprising facing up to reality can be. This book hit a bit too close to me , like if I say it's probably going to be one of my favourite books it's going to be a bit of understatement . Angel is a 18-years-old hijabi and she lives for The Ark, she would die for the members of this boy band.

There's an unspoken connection between Angel and Jimmy, and a certain calmness to them together that I can only really describe as comforting. I aw other reviewers mention this and I agree with them that the ending was kind of unsatisfying and left a few unanswered questions! For a person who needs music in her life just as much as we need air to breathe, this book was a must read for me. Being part of The Ark's fandom has given her everything she loves - her friend Juliet, her dreams, her place in the world. The three-man band just had their big first gig in the US and a lot of new opportunities are waiting for them. Alice Oseman effortlessly and joyfully brings these characters and others to life, treating her subjects - and the subject matter - with compassion and non-judgement, while discussing questions of friendship, teenage identity, fandom and online friendships. Refreshing and wonderful and I already want to read it again, so if you haven't already added it to your list you should definitely keep an eye out when it's released on May 3rd.
