City of Thieves (Fighting Fantasy)

Port Blacksand, the titular city of thieves, is a fascinating place for exploration and skullduggery. I actually breathed a sigh of relief here, because this would mean that my character wouldn’t be stuck looking like some kind of social loser from the dregs of the Jeremy Kyle Show for the rest of his life. Right at the very end, you have to choose to make a potion out of three combinations of ingredients, and you have nothing to go on other than just attempting to pick the right one.

One of the things I want to mention is the artwork of Iain McCraig, which to me is perfect for this story; it is fantastical, whimsical, and just a bit dark, with many delightful details for the attentive viewer to pick up. In 1995 he led the merger of computer games company Domark with Eidos, the name behind the Tomb Raider computer games, where he is now Creative Director. Had such high expectations since this book's rated on the top list of the best fighting fantasy series. I chopped him in two, and took his gold, some garlic, and some knuckle bones he happened to be carrying for some reason.

We did this book in a 2017 edition that’s part of new series of a selection of the Fighting Fantasy gamebooks by Scholastic. While I'm here: thanks for publishing these fair, fun and thorough reviews, Malthus Dire, I have already enjoyed many of them and you consistently point out good things I overlooked in any given FF book. There is fighting violence, but I would be comfortable letting any of my fifth graders try the series. The villains you face aren't too hard/numerous to defeat compared to some of the other books, and even if you get lost in some of the maze-like sections, the book will usually get you back to where you need to be.

In the Wizard "Series 2" edition, instead of rolling the stats for a character as per tradition in Fighting Fantasy gamebooks, the player has the option of choosing a pregenerated character from three choices (see "Further Notes" below for choices). There's also the one little detail of the recipe kill the final boss being wrong - you have to select two out of three items and there is no way of knowing which two. But theres enough fans out there that i know one day some wise ass will do this and it will be fucking awesome. He was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Technology by the University of Abertay Dundee in 2000, and in 2002 received the BAFTA Special Award for his outstanding contribution to the interactive entertainment industry.Deciding that it’d be a good idea to head to the market district, I took a path leading through some narrow alleys, and was attacked by two thieves. All these factors help bump it into something I like and something I'd recommend, and that I still rather like to play through sometimes, even if it's largely by autopilot nowadays. There are several paths through Port Blacksand, and as you play and re-play the book, you will meet many charming and bizarre creatures, some of which will help you, others annoy, and many attack you either frontally or with stealth. Well I blew 10gp on a Ring of Invisibility from that jeweller near the start and it turns out there is literally not a single paragraph where you're invited to use it.
