This study was a fun project we pulled together over the course of a couple of weeks in our spare time. One of the more interesting mysteries of comicdom is just what you’re supposed to think about women within the funnybook pages.

The real answer is that they are trying to get people talking about her, and hopefully that talk leads to people checking out the character’s title and thus generating more sales. Just as artists have sought to capture the perfect derriére throughout time, so too have they sought to render perfect female breasts. Cover artists took great liberty with breasts in the decade beginning 2010 as both [% of Cover] and [% Cleavage] peaked during that time frame. But I do know I just wrote over 1650 words about a title I don’t read and a character I’m not particularly interested in.

For male body dimensions I'd expect to see pretty much a constant for the last 20-30 years, since on first glance nothing much changed. In addition, some breasts are made more provocative by the suggestion (or clear representation) of nipples by shape or shadow, hidden beneath whatever uniform or clothing obscures them: perhaps a bikini top made of chain mail; a latex or leather, form-fitting costume; an athletic shirt (aka the infamous “wife beater”); to name only a few common types.

Instead, we’ll just assume that DC is making a firm statement on women in comics by saying that they are not defined by their double-D’s, and by covering up the cleavage in their skintight costumes, they are showing that heroines are defined by their words and actions rather than their remarkably flawless frames. To be honest, some pre-code titles argued that crime did not pay, because the bad guys were always caught, but at the same time these very same comics taught readers how to strategize and plan those crimes – and where the strategy and planning went wrong.

We then recorded pixel measurements for: breast height and width, cleavage width, waist width, hip width, and cover width. I am less of a fan of the “extra large for no reason” chest types like Power Girl, Black Cat or Cat Woman.
