About this deal

But it had that carefree nostalgic feel to it that reminded me of stories I read as a preteen and teen. What Phoebe doesn't know is that the island's only Academy is a super private school for Gods' descendents.

Adonis, Aphrodite's son, has auditioned for the latest big talent show, and her dad has disappeared off with his new girlfriend. Publication dates are subject to change (although this is an extremely uncommon occurrence overall). Enrolled in an exclusive academy where her new stepfather is headmaster, and the students are anything but ordinary, Phoebe knows getting that scholarship is her only way off the island. This was a classic coming of age tale, of a teenage girl having to find friendship and acceptance in a new area, but with a massive secret to sit on - Great entertainment! But the book has enough fun and imagination and touches of mythology that it is able to go beyond these. This coming-of-age novel combines an authentic feel for modern London and a wonderfully funny and masterfully controlled transportation of the ancient Greek gods into the contemporary world. I guess first off, I should say that I’ve been looking forward to reading this book since I first heard about it, I’m a huge fan of Greek Mythology.

It’s been a long time since I read anything from the Young Adult section of the library, and this debut novel from Alexandra Sheppard has been refreshingly enjoyable, and thought-provoking too. She's just moved in with her dorky dad and self-absorbed older siblings - who happen to be the ancient Greek gods, living incognito in London! These are minor things I picked up on but they didn’t impact my enjoyment at all, just some things for the author to bear in mind in her next book.I guess I was hoping this book had more to do with the Greek gods or even to do with Greece itself, but this felt like a standard chick lit-y teen novel that just happened to be set in Greece and in which the kids were all descendants of the gods. Nate - A chaos magician who is shown to be more level-headed than many of the other recurring characters. Between keeping her family's true identities secret, trying to impress her new friends, and meeting Marco, an actually cute boy, Helen's stress levels are higher than Mount Olympus. Chaos and hilarity ensue as Helen tries to not only adjust to her new life but also find her place within her immortal family. I was also a little put off by the whole writing letters to her mom thing - it felt both like a way to info dump and to recap on things that had already happened in the previous chapters.

There is also a sequel out I plan to pick up and save for a time when I need some cute, simple, uncomplicated reading! When I'm not writing YA fiction, I'm a social media strategist (it's a real job, I promise), and love to bake nearly as much as I love to read. The Greek and Roman myths have never died out; in fact they are as relevant today as ever in their sharp observations about human nature. The additional level of effort required of the author to incorporate the idea of the reality of the Greek pantheon pays off in humorous possibilities for supernatural pranking.
