About this deal

If I’d read it for the first time as an adult, I’d probably have given it only 4 stars, but I’m rating it for my 7 year old self and I do believe it was worth 5 stars at the time. This would appeal better to those interested in seeing what life is like with a big, energetic family, rather than to those looking for an adventurous story full of twists and turns.

She may be little, but Wilma knows this is the year she'll be able to fly with her family in the big broom-flying demonstration!

it now sits on my shelf as a reminder of my first grade teacher who cared enough to push me where others did not. The narrator often interjects to comment on the story, providing humorous insights, explanations and passing judgement on the horrible Alfonso. In Papa Smurf's laboratory, the village leader tells Brenda the various aspects of goodness: excellence, value, virtue, worth, quality, well-being, and honor. However, things don't go as planned when she realizes she is still too little to hold onto the broom and perform all of the tricks.

I enjoyed Massey's story, which, although it has "good" and "bad" witches, manages to paint both in a somewhat sympathetic light. Her efforts to help other witches with various Halloween preparations were similarly unsuccessful, leaving her feeling very down, until she ran into her friend, Mae the mummy. She decides to take that Smurf with her and warns Papa Smurf to turn himself in at Witch Haven or he will never see that little Smurf again. Brenda promises that she will do her best, but Miss Snarly doesn't want her to do her best, but rather her worst, to learn to be evil or else she won't graduate. This story, and the series to which it belongs, will have great child appeal, as many children will be able to identify with the feeling of being too young to contribute to group activities. With the teacher gone, Smurfette and Hefty break Scaredy out of his cage and also get the spell book page that Papa Smurf needs.

Brenda's teacher Miss Snarly, however, overhears this and is surprised to learn that there is a Papa Smurf. She figures that if she can destroy "that little blue goody-goody", then it would truly be "a bat in her hat", and all she has to do is let them lead Brenda to their village for her instant fame and fortune. who finds herself unable to keep up with the more experienced witches of her coven, on their Halloween-night race to the moon, The Littlest Witch follows its heroine as she discovers her own unique destiny as a "Good Witch. As Halloween approaches and children begin to be surrounded by all things dark and mythical that go bump in the night, why not get them reading this little gem from Catnip Books – The Littlest Witch by Bianca Pitzorno is a delightful little tale that warms the heart. She floats in water, cannot see her reflection in a mirror and is the only one who can understand their pet parrot. Even though the writing style is completely opposite to "Magic Tree House" type books, I think this sort of book is important for kids today.

One of the students, Brenda, answers oatmeal, which makes other young witches laugh but simply has Miss Snarly tell her she's wrong. The illustrations for this Halloween story are beautiful, I love Adrienne Adams illustrations and these are some of the nicest ones I've seen, there are some wonderful details such as houses inside oak trees and toadstool seats that I would have absolutely loved when I was a child. Alfonso was also a most unattractive young man, with pimples all over his face, a weak chin, and crooked teeth that were turning green because they hadn’t been brushed for so long. Then, when the director of the broom-flying demonstration went missing, Wilma was able to step into her shoes, saving the day and proving that although she was little, she did indeed have something to contribute. But Great Uncle Sempronio has one condition: if Asdrubale doesn't marry a witch within a year and a month of Sempronio's death, the fortune will go to someone else. There is a family of seven sisters, mother, father, cat, parrot, nanny and many other characters that flit in and out of the book – and in my personal opinion none of these are explored in any great depth, meaning that for me many were forgettable and I struggled to understand who was who. In this companion to The Littlest Mummy , Mae the Mummy's friend Wilma is the littlest witch in the Spooky Woods. Recommended to picture-book readers looking for sweet, rather than scary Halloween fare, and to any child readers who has felt sad about being the youngest or littlest of the group.
