About this deal

Besides admiring the detail and the perfect clean line drawing of this great artist, one of the reason why Heath Robinson's contraptions are so amusing is that he shows them as if they were practical and economical and naive solutions to everyday problems. In “The Adventures of Uncle Lubin” (1902), which he wrote and illustrated, his sense of humour first came to the fore.

It goes on to quote the man himself, thus: "I believe that our sense of humour played a greater part than we were always aware of in saving us from despair during those days of trial. Having a museum dedicated to your life’s work is also testament to a successful career and a good measure of fame. His masterpiece was “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” (1914) in which he set out to provide ‘a record of … the most wonderful moonlight night in fantasy’. A museum dedicated to British artist, satirist and illustrator William Heath Robinson is due to open this weekend.

By the 40s he even had a BBC radio programme trying -- somewhat absurdly -- to advise children on how to draw. At magazines such as The Sketch, he developed his humorous illustrations for adults, culminating in the series of inventions for which he became known by his contemporaries as 'The Gadget King'. It began with the wonderful How to live in a Flat (1936) in which he not only described the many gadgets that could make flat life more comfortable, but also satirised modernist architecture and design. His gadgetry -- despite how daft it was and because of how daft it was -- really embodied the crazy, but innovative culture of Great Britain. Heath Robinson, on the other hand, trained at Islington School of Art and at the Royal Academy Schools. He countered the pompous German propaganda and the depression engendered by the horrors of war with gentle satire and absurdity. In the Wallace and Gromit films, Wallace often invents Heath Robinson-like machines, with some inventions being direct references. Our project will make accessible for the first time a unique collection of his works, supporting documents and published material to inform, educate and entertain a broad range of people. To celebrate his work and influence, the William Heath Robinson Trust is raising funds to develop a London museum dedicated to the illustrator.

JPG) is a fearsome battle vehicle -- half submarine, half zeppelin -- for a double-pronged German attack. The characters were so utterly believable and going through such difficult situations that I couldn't pull my eyes away most of the time. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. The museum houses a permanent exhibition of original artwork, books, photographs, film and other media.

Due to its improvised and ramshackle nature it was often referred to as the "Heath Robinson chaff modification". although it is a large format book, i wished the pictures could be even larger to see all the details in them. He took a stand against war by taking the piss out of Germany's horrendous war machinery," says author Robert Endeacott, a life-long Robinson fan who has developed a screenplay with Tony White based on Robinson's life. Spooner told WIRED: "His pictures are mechanical stories and his brilliance lies not only in the draughtsmanship but in his humour and his attitudes -- a lesson for automata makers who are prone to getting over-excited by machinery for its own sake. With illustrations salvaged from the family archives and commentary by Heath Robinson expert, Geoffrey Beare, Contraptions is the best possible introduction to the work of one of Britain's great comic talents.A photograph at the end of the permanent displays shows Robinson at his desk with these more refined illustrations for magazine and book covers on the walls. Robinson's US counterpart, Rube Goldberg, on the other hand has been treated with more reverence: he has been featured on postage stamps, was awarded a Pulitzer Prize, and annual competitions to build Rube Goldberg machines are held in his honour. The Heath Robinson Museum opened in October 2016 to house a collection of nearly 1,000 original artworks owned by The William Heath Robinson Trust. It was in Pinner that the finest of his book illustrations were made, as well as much of the work that established him as a humorist. Apart from the Trust's collection there is very little of his work in public collections and what there is rarely shown.
