About this deal

In this book, April is trying to settle into her new life at home but, of course, missing her beloved Arctic friend. This feels particularly apt, because whilst The Last Bear touches upon serious themes, at its core, it is a story about the love between a child and an animal. Her writing is perfect for teaching children about climate change, she doesn't hold back in terms of informing children of the terrible effects but everything is done in a sensitive way and they help encourage the younger generation to get involved in activism and be kinder to animals in general. The reader, while being so wrapped up in April’s emotions and the dramatic action, is also inescapably learning about the impact of climate change on this special environment and the responsibility we all have to protect it. April and Bear's second adventure asks profound questions about our impact on the environment while keeping readers on the edge of their seats.

Obviously, April gets herself into some life-threatening situations but it's definitely not too much for the age range. It is one of the most gorgeous, moving, beautiful, breathtaking, perfect stories, ideal for readers aged 9 to 90. I was at my last school for 4 years and we had ********* book fairs every term – and every term, I was disappointed by the narrow range of books.

As well as showing the consequences of global warming, Bear and his cub also mirror April and her father.

Aimed at readers 8 and up it is a powerful message about the state of the Arctic, the demise and hunger of the polar bears and the impact of climate change on all creatures in this special part of our world. She has struggled to make friends at her new school and is mocked for her passion for polar bears and the environment.Full of action and danger, this book had me tense and hopeful that everything was going to turn out all right. The harsh, beautiful environment of the Arctic circle is brought to life in an unforgettable way, and issues such as climate change and the loss of habitat are conveyed in a manner that will be easily absorbed by children. I loved going on another artic adventure and the discussion this book promotes with climate change, nature conservation and human impact is huge and so vital. Beautifully illustrated by Levi Pinfold, Finding Bear is a stunning story of survival, a heartwarming tale of love, and shows us how hope is born from the smallest of beginnings.

There's a really great sense of escapism in this one as well the descriptions of the arctic and the adventurous nature is fantastic. There was just the right amount of choice to suit everyone without being overwhelming and I received comments from parents and staff about the quality of books offered compared to previous sales which have always been based around current crazes and well known celebrity authors. Your selection was perfect for our children and what really made the difference was your ability to engage with each child, discuss their interests and help them to choose a suitable book based on your extensive knowledge of the books you were selling. When she hears that a polar bear has been shot and injured in Svalbard, she’s convinced it’s her friend and persuades her dad to travel with her to the northernmost reaches of the Arctic. Like many children, I grew up on a diet of Blue Peter, following the show’s adventures and falling in love with all the pets. April runs from the Polar Institute in alarm when the man says they shouldn't go looking for an injured polar bear, who probably won't remember her, even if she is THE April Wood! When they get to Svalbard, they are staying in a bit of a shabby hotel, run by Jurgen who is surprised to see a child in Svalbard in the Winter. I love these book and the focus on his humans are impacting the natural world, I love the artic landscape and getting to meet the polar bears again.
