About this deal

As with all collections of short stories, there are likely to be tales that appeal to some readers and others less so. If you're unfamiliar with Wells' work, think late medieval woodcut crossed with more modern horror tropes: he has a way of drawing a dead, unseeing eye (often required in these stories) which is genuinely mortifying. These 22 stories take the reader beyond the safety and familiarity of the town into the isolated and untamed wilderness.

Van az a pár ezer éves gondolat, hogy az ember annál boldogabb életet él, minél közelebb élhet a természethez. By this I mean it is not likely that these stories are already in an anthology you already have in your collection, which is a problem I usually have, especially with vampire stories.

It is not of any detriment to the book but should further volumes follow (which I hope they will), then my curiosity would again be piqued to see stories selected from a variety of nations – certainly, Eastern Europe and Asia could provide a wealth of possible content, and it would be intriguing to see how Wells would visually approach the writings of Gogol, Meyrink, and Kafka, for instance, or the translations made by Lafcadio Hearn of Japan’s haunted heritage. It started badly, with stories written in such heavily accented “old/yocal English” that I couldn’t actually understand what was being said and therefore had to skip the first two stories. I also very much approve of the avenging ghost in John Collier's 'The Lady of the Grey' ensuring a pervy old toff chasing local farm girls gets his just desserts. on another note, it was so interesting to me how pagan beliefs or superstitions ran in line with Christian beliefs on the whole throughout the stories in the anthology, when in modern-day evangelicalism they are presented as polar opposites.I had never seen a Folk Horror anthology before, and especially one that was so beautifully illustrated. When I heard it was being crowd-funded I was a bit wary of what the quality would be like, but there’s no complaint here.

e. white supremacist) identity has replaced a genuine cultural identity and knowledge of this among a lot of white British, particularly English, people. These stories are great for horror beginners, as they tend toward the restrained and distanced horror, instead of the gore and shock of more modern horror. So wicked witches, bad fairies, and the restless dead be damned, for those who are looking to fill up their folk horror fiction shelves, Damnable Tales is a must-have. However, I particularly enjoyed ‘Man-size in Marble’ and ‘The Lady On the Grey’, while Thomas Hardy’s ‘The Withered Arm’ is a well constructed piece of writing.
