About this deal

There are a lot of subplots in the book, too, including racial tensions between Nell and Macy's family, and the Police. Ao longo dos anos a autora tem convergido mais para o género thriller, afastando-se um pouco dos seus romances iniciais. Dorothy Koomson is the award-winning author of 14 novels and has been making up stories since she was 13 when she used to share her stories with her convent school friends. If you like the sound of this style, we would also recommend That Girl from Nowhere from the same author. I loved the sense of time and place that Koomson always creates so well - I may only have been a very small child at the time this was set but I could picture myself there, in the early 1990's, right there with Jude and Nell as they made their horrifying discovery.

An example being when she forced her partner and sister to sit in a room and discuss their issues with each other. The story is told from two perspectives – sisters Nell and Macy – and across a time span of 25 years. This is not a traditional detective story or psychological thriller but a fascinating blend of the two, with a complex layer of emotional truth woven through it that asks more questions than it answers. Her transition to a darker brand of fiction has only added another dimension to her novels and The Brighton Mermaid kept me guessing all the way with its deft deployment of red herrings and sizeable subplots holding interest and supporting character development.I would like to thank Netgalley and Random House UK, Cornerstone for an advance copy of The Brighton Mermaid, a stand alone novel set in Brighton. This book features a lot of damaged characters and that was a great change from the usual gung-ho heroes you often find in books and who are just slightly too together to feel real. We also use them to help detect unauthorized access or activity that violate our terms of service, as well as to analyze site traffic and performance for our own site improvement efforts. Our range of treatments will tempt you if you’ve never experienced beauty treatment before and thrill the most seasoned of visitors! With few leads to go on, the Police closed the case without cracking it, and so it remains one of those unsolved mysteries that become part of local folklore, but Nell struggles to let sleeping dogs, or even sleeping mermaids, lie.

I’d recommend any Dorothy Koomson book I’ve ever read, they’re a different kind of thriller, her books are bought to life by the families she creates. It’s a really fast paced book, with a lot of twists, especially as Nell gets closer to figuring out the truth. Shortly afterwards Nell's friend disappears and she then dedicates trying to find her and help find out who the Brighton Mermaid was. Another brilliant, suspenseful read from a master storyteller' (Candis) 'With a cracking plot to boot - this brilliant read will hook you from the start' (Fabulous magazine)'This will creep its way under your skin and stay there long after you finish the final few gut-twisting chapters.Onto the book I really enjoyed this murder mystery, I loved the setting of Brighton and I love both Nell and Macy.

But if you are waiting to hear our review before giving it a go (thanks, we are honoured), then we here is our honest opinion with as little spoilers as possible. The first part of the story is relatively on the slow side as the scene is set but hold on to your pants when things really kick off! This will creep its way under your skin and stay there long after you finish the final gut-twisting chapters. Fleshed out vividly, understanding Nell’s preoccupations and motivations is implicit to connect with the story and Koomson excels with nuanced insights and her non-judgemental attitude. The Brighton Mermaid, although an emotional thriller with some highly tense and threatening moments still feels, to me, like a love letter to my home city – Brighton.Dorothy joked that she has invented a new genre, the emotional thriller, and this label definitely sums up the journey in this novel. Her sister has also been impacted in a way that has left her with mental health issues and her parents lives were turned upside down. The narrative is fast-paced and kept me wanting to read on, and I love the element of mystery interwoven with topics around family, friendship and secrets. Sometimes I think there are two people in my head – the one who does ridiculous things, and the other one who doesn’t stop her.
