Even if Blue Lorries falls short of winning the Banipal Prize for Arabic Literary Translation, I strongly recommend a parallel study of the Arabic and English texts of this novel for all those aspiring Arabic translators out there as well as those more confident in their craft. Through her teenage years Nada is surrounded by the language of protest--"anarchism," "Trotskyism," communism"--and, one summer in Paris, she discovers the ’68 movement and her first love.

Moving, uplifting, and deeply human, Radwa Ashour’s masterpiece is the story of Egypt in the second half of the twentieth century and a paean to all those who choose a life of activism and quiet defiance.Though the Arabic reads well enough, it is Romaine’s translation that evokes a deeper emotional reaction to the mother’s explanations of all she has done and failed to do. Back in Egypt, she starts school and “ravenously, ceaselessly” devours books on history, sociology and politics. On these sessions you won't be doing any of that, but you will be practicing the sort of tricky manoeuvres truckers perform every shift, including reversing into a loading bay, going round roundabouts and dealing with junctions. The story itself is neither the most riveting nor the most poignant that I have read, but what struck me instead is the complete mastery of the translator over this slippery text.
