This may have been influenced by how people perceived their health aginst the backdrop of the pandemic. In this area (Freshwater Road, Reading), only 50% of the residents were born in the United Kingdom, so the majority of the residents of this area were not born in the UK.
The book provides a thorough description of life in a fictional small town typical for Mississippi at the time.
The majority of pages are undamaged with some creasing or tearing, and pencil underlining of text, but this is minimal. Rather than tell her father face-to-face of her plan to go to Mississippi, Celeste posted him a letter informing him of her intentions shortly before she travelled south.
The people in this small town are well drawn, even though we don't learn many details about a lot of them. The author might have served her reader better if she had been less wordy and descriptive in some instances. The postcode is within the Park ward/electoral division, which is in the constituency of Reading East. The census collection is designed so that each group of postcodes should contain at least 100 people (50 in Scotland). this book has opened my eyes to the depth and widespread racism that lay inherent in the South during the 60's - far more intense than history books ever painted it in my mind.
This is one of the few books I have ever read about which I can honestly say the prose was poetic and lyrical. She won't let the reader forget that they're in Mississippi in the midst of summer, living in an old house that wasn't in good shape even when it was a new house.
