About this deal

Reproduction in whole or part in any form or medium without specific written permission is prohibited. In fact, I highly recommend when there is low light or if wildlife is in clutter, use manual focus override. Its light and manageable, easy to use and gives me the flexibility to get a number of different shots from the same location without costing the earth. The versatility of the Nikon 200-500mm is impressive and makes it easier to photograph all types of subject. Sometimes I’d be trying to pan with a subject and droop a little, letting my focus sensor pull off the subject somewhat.

New is a SPORT VR mode, which claims to allow VR to work well while photographing things that move unpredictably. Sigma and Tamron have poor track records supporting compatibility and repair for lenses over 7 years old, even if the optics can be OK sometimes. That’s a lot of weight to keep steady out in front of you handheld, proper shooting technique or not. However, the HB-71 lens hood included with the Nikon 200-500 has some drawbacks that may affect your shooting experience. However, it's important to remember that proper care and maintenance are essential for any lens, mainly when used in adverse conditions.FX-format super-telephoto zoom lens : offers flexible 200–500mm focal length range (DX-format equivalent: 300–750mm). As a word of caution, never let lenses this heavy just dangle off the camera mount, as applying too much pressure might tilt or damage the camera mount and potentially even break it. Despite its mostly plastic barrel construction (the tip of the zoom ring where the focal lengths are engraved, along with the tripod foot and the mount are made out of metal), one could tell that there are plenty of metal components inside the lens, since it is a pretty hefty lens.

When I am on a safari with the effective focal length of 300mm to 750mm, I can easily photograph eagles, woodpeckers, small forest birds, tigers, elephants, and snakes. You won't see this unless you're racking the lens all the way in and out, and then you can't see it unless you're stopped way down so you can see anything at all when it's way out of focus. This E-type lens (Electronic diaphragm) will work with the following cameras (you can change the lens aperture on these camera bodies): D5,D500, D4,D4S, D3, D3s , Df, D850, D810, D810A, D800, D750, D700, D610, D600, D300, D7500, D7200, D7100, D7000, D5600, D5500, D5300, D5200, D5100, D5000, D3400, D3300, D3200, D3100. So for our second visit to Mablethorpe for the Beach Racing we are looked at the pros and cons of owning a superzoom against a 300mm Prime. ED VR boasts a zoom-lock switch to keep it secure when it’s not in use, and a detachable tripod foot that helps stabilise the lens when using a tripod.

It's easy to read a "HIGH VOLTAGE" sticker on a power pole a mile away at 500mm handheld on a 36MP D810. While I may have seemed casual about carrying it sometimes by the handle in the Galapagos, I actually had a safety strap on it at all times, and I’m glad I did. Shoot at a reasonably high ISO (depends on your camera) but generally ISO 2000 to 4000 can provide a great balance between image quality and noise. The lens barrel is crafted from high-quality polycarbonate material, while the metal mount ensures a secure connection to the camera body.

I carried the lens with me in the car while driving through pretty dusty roads of Joshua Tree NP and Death Valley NP and it did not seem to attract too much dust. It's difficult to get things in focus both in the center and at the sides at 500mm, but if you do, it's sharp even wide-open from edge-to-edge — and there's no falloff. I've tried this lens on numerous Nikon cameras from my 1970s F2AS through today's D810, and it works great on all of them. This range is optimum for wildlife photography and is also a great focal length range on both full-frame and crop-sensor cameras.Leave it ON unless you're on a very sturdy tripod, or if you're making exposures longer than a second on any kind of tripod. With a total weight of 2,300 grams, it is noticeably heavier than the 80-400mm at 1,570 grams, the Tamron 150-600mm f/5-6.

At a minimum, you’re paying nearly three times as much for the 500 PF and upwards of seven times more for the newest 500mm f/4. The Nikon 200-500 is made mostly of plastic in China, which is the same as Nikon lenses that cost twice as much! If you are getting paid to be track side, you can move to where you want within reason and fill your frame with Valentino Rossi laying some darkies on the track. Select NIKKOR lenses have a focusing mode which allows switching from automatic to manual focusing with virtually no lag time by simply turning the focusing ring on the lens.Image sharpness depends more on you than your lens, and lens sharpness doesn't mean much to good photographers. When it comes to hand-holding, although as I have already said above, the three largest glass elements are located on the front of the lens, it still does not make the lens front-heavy. VR is not weather sealed like some of the high-end super telephoto lenses are, but it does a pretty decent job at withstanding extreme cold, dust and moisture.
