About this deal

I’m not sure if the STOP stickers were all in the same place but mine was just after an incident where something is attributed to the wrong person. Cain, Whit, and Marigold happen to be sitting at the same table when they hear the horrendous noise of a woman’s screams. That Hannah had written in a reliable, kind version of Leo to counteract what her penpal had really turned out to be? In all, Gentill did a great job of juggling the novel within the novel, the characters that inspired the fictional ones, the letters to Hannah subplot.

The declining mental health of Leo is very well done and Gentill finds a good way to let us know more that aspect of the story. At the very end, after Letters-Leo has been arrested, in last section of Freddie’s story, Book-Leo arrives at the hospital to take Freddie and Marigold home, in a weird cliffhanger that fizzled out.Whether or not a character is Black will affect his story arc…but perhaps that’s the point you want to make by ignoring it. The very end could be taken as sweet, if you don’t pay any attention and want to see the best in people. Ned Kelly Award winner Gentill ( Crossing the Lines ) presents a complex, riveting story within a story.

Freddie is trying to solve the case of who killed Caroline Palfrey, leaving her body hidden under the buffet table in the library gallery. But we are all still new friends and there is probably a great deal we have not yet told each other. You'd better be handy with a needle and thread," I warn as a spinning button rattles to rest on the floorboards. there's no excuse for each of the friends having 1-2 personality traits when there are fewer sentences they don't show up in than do. He is thrilled when Hannah decides to set her next mystery novel inside the Boston Public Library and lets him read the story chapter by chapter. The mystery is clever enough to keep us guessing, though I did wonder how the person who stole a phone had a good enough photo of the owner to open and use it (facial recognition).

If you’re like me and don’t really love the cover (I know, I know, don’t judge a book by one etc but we all do it) then….As the story progresses, the four of them become friends and find themselves embroiled in the mystery surrounding the death of the young woman and it is revealed that one of them is connected to the murder. This thrilling excursion into metafiction from Australian author Gentill ( Crossing the Lines ) wittily examines the writing process itself. I picked up a nuance of assumptions that can be made about appearance of the people – their racial background. I reach out and touch his face, trying to think of some way to reassure him that I am choosing this with full knowledge of what he did. It makes sense that Liming would posit the meaning of libraries in general in a book about what a library means to a woman: the universalization of intellectual inheritance passes by necessity through women.
