About this deal

Different factions war for power, all for different reasons and Stewart manages to show them all as genuine and motivating. As I’ve mentioned above Nisong begins to redeem herself by the end, as does Jovis even if his actions were not his fault. I do not think I would end up enjoying The Bone Shard War, the concluding installment of The Drowning Empire trilogy, this much without doing a reread to refresh my connection with the story, world, and characters first. It’s exciting and emotional, well-paced and gripping, and the ending is everything I never knew I needed.

You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. For example, it's like Stewart forgot how she showed us Jovis is a great smuggler in the first place. There is a finesse in Lin's negotiation, in knowing how to approach and talk to powerful men and reign in her anger and using her other assets instead of threatening everyone with her bone shard magic or Alanga powers the way her father did. The Bone Shard Daughter is epic fantasy at its most human and heartfelt, concerned with the real lives caught in the gears of empire and rebellion.

There are all these islands and we are supposed to care about rebellions on each island and various injustices on these islands but each island's personality is "island". I compared Nisong's arc to Dolores's from Westworld in previous books because they really mirror each other in a lot of ways, the biggest being that there is a powerful man behind their suffering and when they "woke up" they decided to raise hell.Hence, putting Nisong once again into a position of subdued woman who follows a man, fully aware of his flaws and mistakes, felt like going two steps back. Lin Sukai has won her first victory as Emperor, but the future of the Phoenix Empire hangs in the balance - and Lin is dangerously short of allies. I think it would've been better to either split this book into two or just make some changes to cut down the length.

My issue with this series is that none of it feels believable, none of the characters act like real people, none of the political stakes feel like real stakes. If fact the Shardless Few resolution really didn't make a lot of sense either and kinda got dropped in the final conflicts of the book.I didn’t dislike this version of Lin, but I missed the Lin that had the (relative) freedom to have dreams and ideals at the start. Now this sweeping tale of magic, revolution and mystery, where a young woman's sense of identity will make or break an empire, finally comes to an epic conclusion. We find Jovis, a beloved favorite character of mine, roaming The Endless Sea and under Kaphra’s ruling command. If you have read the first two books in the trilogy, then you know that something big is about to happen. Some things felt like they were added simply for the plot, things that I don’t remember from previous books just added and it felt like it was aided for plot points in this.

This read is a beautiful adventure, I urge you to read Andrea Stewart where you will fall under the spell of thrilling adventure filled with incredible characters and a solid story. The multitude of plot threads would have worked if there had been more variation in goals, personalities, and type of threat. We saw him knowing that with careful use of words you can manipulate bone shard magic and instructions written into shards and yet, his entire arc in this book is that he couldn't do anything because of the commands written into shards. There's "island X" and "Island Y" and everyone has the same thoughts and opinions; they want the children to be taken care of and for the abuses to stop.we were introduced to him as this really smart, quick-witted smuggler and you're telling me it took him over two years to figure out an incredibly simple solution to his entrapment?
