About this deal

She also gave me a mouthful of wine from her wineskin, good thick, black wine, probably from Ispanthia like she was. This story meanders around, sometimes on long tangents, almost as though some scenes were worth writing just to see what funny thing the narrator protagonist would say.

I’d like to tell you it had belonged to my da or something, but my da was a sad bastard miner and couldn’t play the arse-horn after a quart of beans and cabbage. And that's the true story of how on the tenth day of Vintners, I ended up betting my arse on a card game in a sewer, under an army of murdering giants at the very top of the wicked world. Many early reviews from both authors and readers have mentioned that this is a novel suitable for those who loved Kings of the Wyld by Nicholas Eames, and I can certainly agree with this. This is a book of journeys, entertaining in and of itself, but also leading to an inventive conclusion. If you weren’t, you’d have to be a drunk, a foreigner, a suicide, or some sloppy marriage of the three.

His debt has driven him to lie in wait by the old forest road, planning to rob the next traveler that crosses his path. We're talking giants and goblins, vast oceans filled with Kraken and other deadly creatures, and that's just to start.

I was instantly in love and observed each of Kinch’s intentions towards said floof with an eagle eye, ready to jump on any hint of a negative possibility. The fact that Kinch is beholden to the Takers Guild for his education as a thief, a debt he is unable to pay off and hence ends up in servitude to them, of course strikes a contemporary note. I blame myself for that because there were many new terms and I thought that I needed to remember everything but it was mostly part of Kinch’s humor and I just could not take things more simply. This was a world full of rich culture too, from the Spanth, Norholter, and Galtish races each with their own distinct language, accent, beliefs, and Gods. I pulled and loosed first, feeling the good release of pressure in my fingers and the bite of the bowstring on my inner arm.

It plucked Spear’s foot out from under her, spilling her on her face, then began shredding her back with its hardened beak. Now Kinch is an awesome character because he is hilarious but he is also three dimensional and you can’t help it but to care about him. I looked over at Pagran and decided he looked uncomfortably like a billy goat, what with his long head, long beard, and unlovely habit of chewing even when he had no food. I pointed at the stranger and made the sign for magicker, not confident they would know that one, and I’m not sure if Pagran did; he told me there was a magicker behind me, or at least that’s what I thought at first, but he was actually telling me to put a magicker in my arse.

Two younger bravos near the bar had short copper cups at their belts, used in Towers to collect coin. Some traditional fantasy fans may not like how dark and horrific it gets (I've read Abercrombie, Martin and Cook and the like… and this one is one of the darkest). Only that instead of being the hilarious, darkly delicious, fast-paced tale Evil Overlord is, The Blacktongue Thief is boring as fish, packed with useless blah blah blah blah, and slow-paced as shrimp.La sombría severidad de todos los eventos se compensa con el humor negro de Kinch, que se materializa como bromas en general internas entre el narrador y el lector. However, if you do not connect with Kinch and his humour, you will have a tough time reading this book. And now it was likely off to be sold for next to nothing and the two shytes who will have taken it so far ahead of me I had little chance to catch them.
