Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse had a lot of expectations given the high bar set by 2019’s “Into the Spider-Verse,” but the film does not disappoint. To aid in this emotional story telling, the kaleidoscopic nature of the images, as well as the rainbow colouring combine with the fist-pumping score to create a perfect union of picture and sound. In some respects it’s a shame; this film is a love letter to Spider-fans, and is actually great for the casuals and kids, too. Thereby in writing the characters from this standpoint, there is a huge emotional hook, one of understanding - and one of justice; so, when it comes to choosing one over many, it is easy, and the audience is on board. Miles Morales, the charismatic Spider-Man at the heart of the movie, continues to evolve as a character, grappling with the responsibilities of being a superhero and the challenges of navigating the multiverse.
Critical comparisons to Empire Strikes Back seem fair – Across the Spider-Verse succeeds on that level for its dazzling beauty and (mostly) for its narrative form.
Just when you think it is all too much with the bright images and thumping soundtrack becoming overbearing, it changes tact and intimacy ensues and you are immediately drawn back into the narrative. At 2:09 there is heart stopping moment when Miles Morales is punched, then followed by some creepy surround audio when he faces The Prowler.
