Released in 1995 on CD, cassette and double vinyl. A limited edition triple vinyl version was also released at the same time, containing "Cut for Life" (7:09) (replacing "Song of Life"), "Half Past Dub" (3:38) and a longer version of "Open Up" (8:44). [29] It was re-released in 2017. [30] 2000 double CD re-release [ edit ] Revisit Joe Robert's interview with Barnes about cancer, therapy and releasing an album in 2022 from earlier this year. Leftfield was formed in 1989, before emerging publicly in 1990 with Not Forgotten, a song that established a template for a new strain of British house leaning away from American styles dominating UK clubs. Released in January 1995, their debut album Leftism remains one of the defining statements of dance music, a gloriously inter-woven bombardment of musical styles and immaculate grooves, nominated for a Mercury prize and later voted in the top ten greatest albums of all time by readers of Q magazine. The album spawned numerous hit singles in Open Up – their now legendary collaboration with John Lydon; Original, featuring Curve’s Toni Halliday; Release the Pressure, featuring Earl Sixteen; and Afro-Left, with vocals by Neil Cole, aka Djum Djum. They have always been regarded as one of electronic music’s defining live acts. The now-infamous Liveism tour that followed Leftism’s release set a new precedent in sonic presentation as the behemoth sound system, which aimed to replicate the cataclysmic bass effect of reggae sound systems, incurred more complaints than Motörhead, and a ban from Brixton Academy when plaster started flaking from the ceiling. The tour elevated dance music from anonymous club PA to major event, with guest vocalists joining the party.

Leftfield - Leftism - (Vinyl LP) | Rough Trade

The first album in 7 years from seminal electronic music pioneers and twice Mercury Prize Nominated, Leftfield. Currently reaching a new audience through Idris Elba’s Gucci ad, this is their 4th album in their 28 year history. It's a dancefloor album full of big sounds, big songs and a big production. It's Leftfield at their purest. At first this seemed like a winner.... Pallas in the runouts and their usual fantastic inner sleeves (best in the biz). Couldnt see any groove defects and records fairly flat (i mean can anyone press a perfectly flat record anymore lol?). a b Eccleston, Danny (March 2000). "Inscrutable London duo's dance masterstroke. Better than the new one with the Guinness ad". Q. No.162. Throughout the 90s Leftfield were untouchable live and on record, starting a snowball rolling for British dance music alongside outfits like Orbital, Underworld and the Dust / Chemical Brothers in breaking electronic music from the underground, onto the stage and into the charts. Leftfield are giving their 1995 debut 'Leftism' and 1999's follow-up 'Rhythm And Stealth' fresh double-vinyl pressings, out 19th May.There has been so much music and new genres since we made Leftfism,” continues Daley. “The baton has been passed on four or five generations but i like to think our record gave music and pop culture a little nudge at the time. It was part of a movement and musical revolution that came from a DIY mentality born from the technology available. The album is like part of me that represents my youth and energy of a more innocent and quite different time both socially and musically. When I listen to it now i think: yeah, nice one, that was definitely worth all the effort and late nights.” Earl Sixteen, Cheshire Cat, Papa Dee, Djum Djum, Toni Halliday, Danny Red, John Lydon, Lemn Sissay – vocals [6] Paul and I really worked well together,” says Barnes. “We each respected the other’s opinion. It was all about the music. And now, I’ve come to enjoy it again. I appreciate that it means a lot to so many people. I’m really honoured and often deeply moved by all the amazing things that people say about the record. Having Matt Colton re-master the album was a real pleasure, and I realised that Paul and I had created something really special.” Cooper, Paul (31 August 1999). "Leftfield: Rhythm and Stealth". Pitchfork . Retrieved 1 August 2013. The influential UK duo of Neil Barnes and Paul Daley previously reissued their seminal debut in 2017 with a remastered triple-vinyl reissue and tour for the LP's 22nd anniversary. 'Rhythm And Stealth' hasn't been repressed on wax since 2010.
