About this deal

In a turn, each player rolls two dice and uses the results, which can be manipulated with the aid of workers, to get tiles from a common board and then eventually placing them onto their kingdom.

The Castles of Burgundy (Special Edition) is played over a series of five rounds, consisting of a minimum of two turns per round. Non obvious is subjective, the choice made was to display only tiles that can be placed and possible estate / duchy destinations for the Place tile action, and tiles that can be taken for free from the main board, with a church, market or carpenter. The efficiency tiles seem to provide a benefit in mitigating the number of dice you spend on workers throughout the game.

This matters because you can only place a new hex adjacent to one you already have on the board, and because points are given out for completing regions on the board–that is, self contained sections of the same color. If there’s one drawback to The Castles of Burgundy it’s the set-up, with many small tiles that need to be arranged it’s a touch fiddly.

This point salad of a game from prolific designer Stefan Feld balances challenging strategy with diverse gameplay. The beige tiles are buildings, each of which will give you instant bonuses that will be vital in ensuring you’re in a position to take advantage of every die you roll. It’s more interesting than even that though, because the tiles also determine your points according to how they are positioned in your land. Tiles you’re holding but not using do you no good, so sometimes what you’re most interested in is a swift turnaround. This means taking an extraordinary risk in 3 and 2 player games where, depending on the luck of the draw, it might be actually impossible to fill the space with all of one animal type.

However, there are only 12 regions to complete (13 if the player elects to start in the larger castle space on the top).I had watched several how to play videos already and tend to have a really great memory for stuff like this so it didn’t bother me, but my wife said it felt too much like a job. In context, The Castles of Burgundy is not as complex as some other games such as U-Boot, The Lost Ruins of Arnack or Tindaya; but is more in line with games such as Tzolkin (The Mayan Calendar) or Santa Maria. The cover art is perfectly reminiscent of medieval France and definitely has that familiar Euro game feel about it. While you might want different tiles to the ones that are offered you are never in a position of picking a tile that does nothing for you.

The Castles of Burgundy (special edition) has been designed with a level of care and attention to detail that is second-to-none. You’re looking at around 30 minutes per player, but there’s so little downtime because each turn is a quick two step process.

Castles of Burgundy holds a special place in our hearts, since it was one of the first Euro games in our collection.
