or in the case of this book perhaps if Joe hadn’t followed his wife’s car when he saw it, he wouldn’t have ended up in the middle of a murder investigation. These are pretty basic questions but in this novel issues are advanced through facebook postings, tweets, cellphone messaging and syncing.

This book kept me on the edge of my seat and had me quickly turning those pages, I just had to know what in the world was going on! Ranked from Christmas level 1 - 5 (with Level 1 being Christmas in the background of the story, and Level 5 being a full-on, 100% Christmas-y plot! While driving home with his young son, Joe Lynch spies his wife’s Melisa’s car turn into a hotel parking lot. This song went through my head every time I picked up this book, so I thought I’d share with you all!

This book managed to shock, delight, and amaze this thriller-lover with every single turn in the plot. These are stories that entertained me, challenged me, thrilled me, and kept me on the edge of my seat; in this list you’ll find Gothic horror, Nordic Noir, psychological suspense, and much more; a wide array of crime fiction subgenres, but all excellent books that stood out from the pack for me in 2022. As the evidence piles up against him and seemingly everything that can go wrong does go wrong, he comes to the soul-sucking realization that he cannot trust anyone. But Logan keeps readers guessing as to exactly what happened to Ben, who is responsible for his fate, and exactly why Joe finds himself at the center of the mystery until the very end of the story. And the inclusion of a mini-cliffhanger at the conclusion of almost every chapter made it difficult to put down. His life was turned upside down because of lies his wife was telling him and lies that someone else was spreading about him. Unfortunately, it’s not a very evenly matched fight and, when the much larger Joe tries to push the smaller Ben away, Ben falls and hits his head.

However the story slowed considerably and started to drag quite a bit in the middle, to the point that by the time I got to the “twist” at the end, it felt anti-climactic (though it probably didn’t help that I already figured out most of the ending already by then so the surprise element wasn’t there). Unfortunately, the execution didn’t really work for me – I felt that the plot was a bit all over the place (especially in the second half of the book), the characters were one-dimensional and written in a way that made all of them unlikable (with the exception of the kid William), and too many elements of the story just seemed implausible. Sometimes you just need to read a really fun psychological thriller—and that’s the boat I found myself in last week. Lie after lie is batted around, and the author exposes the intrusive nature of technology these days and how the lack of privacy can tear lives apart. The novel opens very benignly and quickly devolves to threats, physical confrontation, lies and importantly loss of a cell phone. The ending was one I never saw coming, and the entire read kept me on the edge of my seat, especially with its current and relevant topics of hacking and overuse of social media. After losing sight of his wife briefly Joe manages to find her inside the building talking with a family friend, only the conversation looks to be quite intense. BookBrowse seeks out and recommends the best in contemporary fiction and nonfiction—books that not only engage and entertain but also deepen our understanding of ourselves and the world around us.

Despite this effort, I must admit that I wasn’t successful in figuring it all out before I reached the end. After devoting my entire October to-read list to supernatural thrillers for spooky season, I was ready to get back to my psychological suspense roots this month—and ideally, I wanted something that was a little bit more lighthearted and “popcorn-y” for a change of pace. Joe's wife, Mel, admits the affair and even though she says she is very sorry for all that has happened, Joe doesn not trust her anymore. Next are the unanswered questions: Why was main character Joe's wife, Mel, secretly meeting friend/neighbor Ben? There’s an undeniable entertainment value to LIES that will suit readers to whom this “tried and true” domestic thriller setup appeals; T.He can trust no one, as his friends abandon him due to his connection to what has happened and he is suspended from his job. British journalist Logan's first foray into crime fiction is an adrenaline-fueled page-turner that explores the fragility of domestic bliss. More than any other criteria, the key thing these books have in common is simple: they are all books I’ve continued to think about since I finished reading them. When he arrives, he finds his wife, Mel, arguing with Ben, a family friend and the husband of one of Mel’s best friends from college.
