About this deal

A 289min long workprint version exists. It has never been officially released but circulates as a video bootleg. The bootleg contains the following extra material not included in either the original theatrical release or the "redux" version. Just as the original theatrical version is regarded as the best version of Apocalypse Now, Apocalypse Now Redux is generally accepted as the worst. The film still has many strengths, and it does add interesting context to the well-known scenes and story of its predecessor. For many, however, the extended runtime of Redux prevents it from being a real contender with the theatrical release, since the main Apocalypse Now: Redux difference is its additional 49 minutes of material that don't amplify the story but bog it down instead. The final fight scenes with a big tier 5 city ending monster? Significantly shorter than half of the group discussions about how to setup experiments to test aspects of the system. And yes, these versions too are sourced from the new 4K OCN scan. So the Blu-rays in this set represent the best available versions of the film on that format. DISC FIVE (BD) – SPECIAL FEATURES

Apocalypse Now is an interesting film, not because it is supposedly an anti-war film, but because it is surreal and shows an interesting journey into madness. To the majesty of these scenes in their progression to Kurtz's words "the Horror," Coppola has now added 49 minutes, most of them devoted to a visit by the crew to a French plantation, a colonial leftover that somehow survives. At dinner the Americans and French discuss the colonial history of Vietnam, and Willard's eyes meet those of Roxanne ( Aurore Clement), a widow who will spend the night in his arms. Other new footage includes dialogue and byplay on the boat, a second encounter with the Playmates, and additional dialogue by Kurtz. Isaac has the knowledge, strength and power to become a true pillar and will seek to use this to protect the world as a whole. But how? Through knowledge. It's knowledge that allows millions of characters to evolve, rather than just a hundred.

We’ve talked about all of this content before in our review of the Full Disclosure Edition and the previous DVD releases too. It is, in a word, tremendous. It’s also quite comprehensive. But that’s not all you get here… DISC SIX (BD) – HEARTS OF DARKNESS & NEW FEATURES A good ways of dealing with the character sheet I've read in a different book I cannot remember the name of -

A slightly longer French plantation sequence. After the French woman strips she crawls into the bed with Willard and they begin kissing.

Very slow build "chosen one" trope that fails to adequately set the stage for the scope of the problem. The MC does what other overpowered MC's will do, level up non-stop, but without a specific goal beyond "save the world" a lot of the book ends up feeling like an excuse for info dumping. Actually, you could argue that that is explicitly true. There is no real plot and the MC has no real goals. He's short-sighted and unwilling to even consider compromising his own values to achieve his long term goal of SAVING THE WORLD. He pretty much half-SSes everything he does on the premise that doing more would jeopardize his personal anonymity. a b Ken Hughes, "Ed Goldfarb: Synthesizing the Apocalypse" (2001), Keyboard, Vol. 27, No. 9, pp. 54-56, 58. Available at https://openmusiclibrary.org/article/959386. Article reprinted at https://edgoldfarbmusic.com/portfolio/apocalypse-now-redux. The scene where Willard meets Kurtz in his bed chamber contains more dialogue....as Kurtz makes it clear that he knows why Willard is there. He may have been one of the most well-regarded artists in his field, but Coppola was still an underdog, up against the odds from start to finish. For an audience hanging on his every word, he recalled mangling his Oscar statuettes in a fit of anguish (his mother later got the Academy to replace them), and regaling his despairing crew with a riff on a classic show tune from Damn Yankees. “I went to them, and I said, ‘A good screenplay, we haven’t got. A good movie, we haven’t got. A good director, we haven’t got. What’ve we got? We’ve got heart!’” Plot-wise, NOTHING important happens. I kept waiting for the actual plot to start, then the book ended. The plot is the straightforward regressor formula: prevent the apocalypse. But this series takes the road less traveled by having the character do what they can to prepare humanity for the event. So rather than forming an elite kill squad that hoards all the special stuff, the MC joins a research team and assists/guides one of the brightest minds from his previous timeline. Later in the book, the author calms down with the temptation of flashing (fairly meaningless) stats and gets down to the important things like characters and story.
