I’ve struggled with the notification options on an Amazfit watch before, so I set my expectations low. But I was pleasantly surprised by the Band 5’s notification system. I could customize which phone notifications I wanted pushed to my wrist, plus whether I wanted to preview their contents. I could even decline phone calls if someone rang me mid-workout. As we’ve seen with the Wyze Band and Fitbit Versa 2, there’s something James Bond-like about whispering Alexa commands into your wrist. The Amazfit Band 5 gives you access to many of the best Alexa skills, such as getting a weather report or changing the setting of your compatible smart lights. Open the Amazfit app and follow the on-screen instructions to pair your band with your smartphone via Bluetooth. The Amazfit pair offers an overhauled heart rate sensor array on board, multiband GPS, 150+ workout modes, and intelligent detection of workouts, including gym repetitions. It’s another win for Fitbit in terms of offering features specifically built around women’s health. Fitbit offers the ability to show menstrual and fertility cycles via the Fitbit mobile app. It also makes some of that data viewable on its smartwatches.

We’ve had mixed experiences with mirrored notifications. In general, you can decide which phone notifications you want pushed to your wrist, plus whether you want to preview their contents. You can’t reply to messages, but as one of the best smartwatches for Android and iOS, the GTS/GTR series lets you answer calls, no matter your connected smartphone. Still, the Apple Watch is better catered for iPhone users, while the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 and all the best Samsung watches are better for Samsung phone users. It's a single health score derived from heart rate and is designed to make sure you're working that heart regularly. When we did manage to get some data, it was kind of what expected. Average heart rate data and maximum heart rate data was largely off in comparison to a chest strap monitor. Based on our experience, it's capable of spending that time away from the charger but that really is dependent on what features you have turned on and use regularly.

The Amazfit Band 5 also offered reliable data with plenty of detail, although we found sleep duration details to be over estimated, which often painted a rosier picture.It’s clear if you value or like the idea of having a smart assistant to talk to like you can on an Apple Watch or a Fitbit smartwatch, the Amazfit Band is the one that’s going to have more appeal. Amazfit and Fitbit both have strong smartwatch lineups and it's a tough call between the Fitbit Versa 4 and Amazfit GTS 4 (and rounded-faced GTR 4).
