I think we both wish we were in some sort of nineties cop show where she could open the drawer of her desk and pull out a bottle of whiskey and a couple of glasses.
Just My Luck (Audio Download): Adele Parks, Louise Brealey
Initially, long standing friends, the Pearsons and the Heathcotes, claim shares in the win as they assert that they have always been part of a syndicate. Adrien's life was torn between being hounded by fans or by being oppressed by his overbearing father. the story shows what strong emotions greed and envy are, and can make people do the most unthinkable things. Just My Luck really was escapism of the most banal variety that would make me think twice about reading future books by the author. There's a reveal moment later in the book that could explain Lexi's attitude but by that point I just didn't really care to be honest. However, the group had some issues so Lexi and Jake played the numbers on their own - and won - to the tune of nearly 18 million pounds. The book led me quickly to what I thought was a fairly straight-forward story-line of greed revolving around a lottery win but as the book progressed, the twists and turns began to come thick and fast.

Many of the scenes take place at the elementary school so students will be able to identify with many school events. Even so, each individual chapter is so well crafted and engaging that the story’s intrigue and suspense continue to build, and the characters' emotions ring true and evocative throughout. McGovern does a wonderful job of validating Benny's feelings of insecurity (he's average in all ways that count when you're ten), but she also shows us what a perceptive and empathetic kid Benny is.As the new winners struggle with everything that such a windfall means to their family and to everything around them, lies and secrets come to light. Imagine winning the lottery after you’ve just had a falling out with your best friends that you just happened to be in a lottery syndicate with the week before. Just My Luck brings to light the story of Lexi and Jake, an ordinary working couple, who complete the same routines week in week out. If you ever thought you wanted to win the lottery, this is a great book to let you know why you don't. When a middle-class British family wins the lottery, the money causes more problems than anyone could have imagined.
