About this deal

This award-winning whisky begins with aromas of cinnamon sugar, fresh mint leaves, dried orange peels, and butterscotch. Take a sip and be transported to a world of ripe berries, oaky wood, dried fruits, vanilla beans, and sweet treacle. You’ll be met with just a hint of smoke at the very end. It’s one of those whiskies that I don’t hate, am glad I tried, but won’t be trying again anytime soon because I’m let down by it. There was nothing offensive about it and the aroma and palate both had some nice aspects to them, but they came across far too light and flighty, It’s like the diet version of a really good Speyside and leaves me wanting more, but never quite able to find the substance I want in this glass. This is definitely a whisky that needs a higher proof and maybe even another year or two in the barrel.

The Speyside region is in Morayshire, within the Scottish Highlands, with the distilleries distributed either side of the river Spey, hence its ‘Speyside’ name. Technically it’s a sub-region of the Highlands, and there is some confusion over where exactly some of those distilleries belong. The nose swirls with aromas of sweet sherry, raisins, vanilla, and slight citrus. The sip reveals hints of sweet malts, vanilla beans, candied orange peels, and charred oak. The last sip is sweet and spicy with citrus and caramel. If you’re new to whisky then Glen Moray’s Elgin Classic is a great place to start, not least because it’s a bargain price and available just about everywhere you can buy whisky. The distillery is based in the city of Elgin, capital of the Speyside region, and the bottle that shares its name is typical of the grassy style of whiskies the region produces. Initial notes of caramel and lemon zest waft up from the glencairn and pave the way for some fruit and floral notes to come sifting through. A bit of honey, vanilla and whisky spice notes come drifting through with a touch of oak and herbs. It may sound like there is a lot going on… but there isn’t. It’s all very light and airy. Coming drifting through as hints and wisps. The tastes you’ll discover will, like the strength, vary according to release, but they always have lots of flavour and a sumptuous creamy feel to them. The most recent release, Alba, was matured in an American white oak (Latin name Quercas Alba) and to the creaminess you can add tasting notes of tropical fruits, vanilla and warmer cinnamon spice. It’s a delicious whisky, however much you decide to dilute it. Speyburn is a very well respected distillery with a wide appeal (particularly in America) yet, somehow, there are still too many people who are unaware of the brand and will overlook its whisky in favour of some of its shoutier neighbours. This is a shame because its sweet, Speyside flavours should please most palates. The results immediately show why it’s such a magnet for awards, from the sherry-soaked raisins and honey on the nose to the chocolate and butterscotch in the taste, and a touch of coffee towards the finish. Unlike some whisky that has seen a lot of Sherry action, this one doesn’t overburden the senses with sweet, vinous flavours – those casks simply complement the spirit and add new layers to an outstanding, sipping whisky. This single malt is a sherry fan’s dream. Matured in a combination of first-fill and refill Oloroso sherry butts for all twelve years of the maturation process, this expression is spicy, sweet, and highly sippable. A truly memorable whisky for fans of sherry-matured single malts. Fancy trying a Speyside whisky straight from the barrel? Of course you do. In which case get your hands on a bottle of Aberlour A’Bunadh. That straight-from-the-barrel strength will be around 62% – it’s released in limited run batches so the strength will vary according to exactly which cask it came from. Be brave and have a little sip neat, then add water until it reaches your preferred taste. The fruit has turned a bit towards the dried variety, but the vanilla and honey notes have stayed true to what they were on the nose. Malt, whisky spice and a toffee like sweetness move about on a lightly nutty underpinning. The flavor, like the aroma, suffers from being too light. The flavors feel very topical with no real depth to them. With so many working distilleries, you can get just about any type of Scottish whisky from the Speyside region, but it’s best known for favouring fruity flavours ahead of anything peaty. Much of the more intense fruit flavours it produces comes from ageing whisky in Sherry casks. This is an approachable single malt for people who aren’t too keen on sherry-finished whiskies. This is one is all rich oak and caramel. Glengoyne 12 Glengoyne
