I've loved a few shows I've seen of Derren Brown's: 'Miracle', 'Russian Roulette', 'Sacrifice', and 'How to Win the Lottery', but this is the first book I've read of his and I'm just completely in awe of his brilliance. I guess he's a humanist - which is fine by me -and for anyone who doesn't believe in "something beyond" I think it will be of great help.That same year, he appeared in a comedy sketch at the beginning of an 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Deal or No Deal special. Concerning his apparent success at hypnotising people, he stated that he can normally spot a suggestible type of person and chooses that person to be his participant. I've been a fan of Derren Brown's TV shows for many years and couldn't resist when I saw he'd written this wonderful little book! Channel 4 responded by arguing that it was made "very clear that attempting any form of robbery was criminal behaviour.
It is split into succint, digestible chapters that will each leave you pondering the choices we make each day, often unknowingly and ending with advice on small changes that we can practice that will make a big difference. Pure Effect is a more traditional book of trickery and technique and offers an insight into some of the methods that Brown employs, and offers a starting point for development for the reader's own use. He also offers autobiographical stories about his own experiences as a former Christian, and discusses his scepticism about religion, allegedly 'psychic' phenomena and other supernatural belief systems. In Happy Derren Brown explores changing concepts of happiness - from the surprisingly modern wisdom of the Stoics and Epicureans in classical times right up until today, when the self-help industry has attempted to claim happiness as its own. Many of them live for longer than us humans and it's interesting to me the way they learn to mimic human voices even though they don't really comprehend what they're saying.

I liked the way he gives practical help and although I'm not 100% convinced by what he recommends, I can see it helping a lot of people. Amongst a varied and notorious career, Derren has played Russian Roulette on live television, convinced middle-managers to commit an armed robbery in the street, led the nation in a séance, stuck viewers to their sofas, successfully predicted the National Lottery, motivated a shy man to land a packed passenger plane at 30,000 feet, exposed psychic and faith-healing charlatans, and hypnotised a man to assassinate Stephen Fry.
