About this deal

Originally collected by British anthropologist Sir Claud Hollis, and included in his 1909 book The Nandi: Their Language and Folk-Lore, the tale has been modernized by Verna Aardema, whose many excellent adaptations of African folklore include the Caldecott Medal-winner, Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People's Ears. It tells the story of a young Maasai boy named Kondi who helps bring rain to his drought-stricken village on the Kapiti Plain in Kenya.

The second fairly obvious observation is that the format of the story, the cumulative or House-that-Jack-Built format, works well for this tale in which each thing is directly related to the next. Use this wonderful sensory story for Bringing the Rain to Kapiti Plain lesson plan to teach your KS1 children. It uses repetition and rhyme to tell a Kenyan folktale that reflects the culture’s relationship with nature. This was a great book that really fitted with the rainy weather, to show that some areas really want rain!

Verna Aardema was an award-winning American author who published retellings of many African traditional tales. I found that all the lines fell between 8 and 12 syllables, and that the pattern of stresses tended to be anapestic, two unstressed syllables followed by a stressed one. Do young readers ever ask if a causal relationship between the feather dropping and the drought ending has been satisfactorily established? This was enjoyable to read and I just reserved this author’s book: Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People’s Ears, a title that I find intriguing. My mom remembers hearing LeVar Burton read it on Reading Rainbow (I do not), but the Reading Rainbow insignia on the front and the Dolly Parton's Imagination Library blurb on the inside front cover was enough to recommend this book to me (If LeVar or Dolly told me to read the phone book cover-to-cover, I would do it.

Musical Instruments Educational Poster, Musical Instruments, Music Poster, Preschool, Homeschool Resource, Kindergarten ₹200. But the story begins with a 10 line introduction and the middle 6 lines of the introduction have unstressed endings. Usually, there are just a few sentences in a sensory story (10 or less) and each sentence is paired with a sensory stimulus.I think a perfectly consistent rhythm would have veered in the direction of boring and singsongy text, so it’s good to see the “rules” judiciously broken. January 2023 update: I happened upon a copy of this book around the house and read it again before donating it. Great story with fun rhythmic lines that build on the story, along the lines of "the house that jack built.
