About this deal

In amongst your camping chairs, portable heaters, passive coolboxesand the rest of your touring kit, tyre compressors are essential for safe towing. What’s more, the pressure reading isn’t entirely accurate, although it is mostly only a few PSI out. If it was easy enough to fit a three-pin plug for example, I’d happily leave this handy unit set up in my garage.

Car Tyre Inflators | Ring

Sadly our Practical Motorhome testers were somewhat underwhelmed by the Ring RAC700 4×4 Air Compressor, deciding that it was neither a handy compact DIY tyre inflator nor a super-fast professional tool. It is weatherproof, has anti-vibration rubber-mounted feet, inline fuse protection, thermal overload protection, robust metal body, brass connector and durable storage case. The quick-set auto-stop function allows you to set your target pressure and the device does the rest for you, stopping when it’s ready. I wouldn't have thought that the 42 seconds the on-test RAC-900 took to inflate a motorhome tyre from 50psi to 60psi can be classed as "an eternity". Dashboard sockets tend to have a maximum design limit of no higher than 15A (and often less than that).BAR, this Michelin air compressor tyre pump is very useful, coming complete with an LED lamp, accessory adaptors, and a USB port for charging your smartphone. I can’t see any persuasive reason not to carry the pump in the motorhome because, if I needed to use the pump when travelling, it would not be to make minor adjustments to tyre pressures and - as I don’t have/carry bicycles - a bike track-pump would have no obvious value for me. It's about 2ft long and takes up more space than a compressor but really easy to use IMO no leads to move around. Speed of inflation was an important part of this testing process, so every item had to inflate a 205/55 x 16 tyre from flat to 30PSI, against the clock.

Professional High Power Air Compressor, 280W - Ring

If you just want to put a couple of psi into a motorhome's tyres every now and again, then a good quality 'track' cycle-pump should be OK. To use it with a car the bonnet must be open and the battery cover removed to expose the battery terminals. Are you seeing a pressure reading on the pressure gauge provided when connected to a tyre (you should)? Once plugged into a car’s 12V socket, the LCD screen indicates the immediate level of PSI as zero and the intended target. However if you find yourself in the middle of nowhere with a completely flat tyre and you hope you have a slow puncture and you want to drive it to a nearby garage, then turn the engine on.
