The Doorly’s brand was acquired by Foursquare in 1993, and it’s possible that the emergence of the El Dorado 15 YO the year before (it was one of the first aged premium rum brands regularly and plentifully issued by a major house) might have had something to do with that; and much of Mr. It’s a blend of pot and column still rum, some 90% of which was aged in ex-bourbon barrels, and 10% in Madeira casks (12 years in each). What sharpness there was seemed to be more imparted by the wood, as it listed towards some oak influence, and maybe vanilla. Notes of red wine and blackberries mingle alongside dark chocolate and some faint notes of marmalade. Long time readers of this site (both of you, ha ha) will know of my indifference to the Doorly’s XO, the R.I’m not trying to be negative; I think your reviews are great and I especially love the background information on the brands. The closing three paragraphs of the Rum 66 review, published almost exactly a year ago, are as applicable now as they were then. This rum personifies everything I love about Barbados rum products and is one of my favorite discoveries of 2016.

Overall aromas were well integrated, and while for me it presented some of the same issues as the XO — too thin, too faint, too delicate — it wasn’t totally derailed by them either. The first sip of the rum envelops the tongue with a nice oak base with the rich caramel and vanilla flavors nipping around the edges. Using both column and pot still rums, this 12 year rum is aged using a combination of American White Oak Bourbon barrels and Madeira casks.Presentation wise the Blue Macaw is again present and the typeface etc is the same as the rest of the Doorly’s line up. After waiting a while for Doorly’s Aged 12 Years to be available outside of Barbados another new Doorly’s release wasn’t anticipated by myself.
