About this deal

In terms of technique, position the end of the tip a few millimetres away from your teeth. Dr Khurrum says, “Direct the stream towards the gum, aiming for the spaces between the teeth to remove trapped debris. If you have gaps between your teeth, angle the nozzle towards each tooth.” Water flossers can be used in combination with interdental brushes where the gaps in between the teeth allow,' says Dr Sharma.

There are three pressure settings which offer up to 2,000 water pulsations per minute, plus a DIY pulse button and two jet tips with different coloured collars so you can share the unit with someone else. It’s a little disappointing that this water flosser only comes with one type of jet tip, although I suppose that’s part of the reason Ordo can keep the cost down. Once it’s on, you need to run the nozzle slowly across the gum line, making sure you get between the teeth, starting with the lower teeth then moving to the upper teeth. Keep your mouth closed as much as possible, but let the excess water run out of your mouth into the sink as the jet won’t do anything in a mouth full of water.

In most cases, they fire a stream of water under pressure around the gum line and into the gaps between your teeth. This removes any food particles left behind after brushing and chips away at any plaque. They’re particularly good in areas of the mouth where you might struggle to floss, and can also help clean around bridges, braces and false crowns. Yet the important thing is that the Cordless Plus still delivers an excellent clean. The lower intensity isn’t too weedy, making it ideal for starters or users with sensitive teeth, while the higher intensity does a great job of cleaning around the gum line and between your teeth without going overboard and making things uncomfortable. If you struggle with this technique, which some of our testers did, you could use your cordless water flosser while in the shower if it specifies it's safe to do so. Of those we tested, the Waterpik Cordless Advanced and Nicwell Smart Oral Irrigator specify both are. How to clean a water flosser The attachments include two classic high-pressure jet tips for everyday use with different coloured collars, so you can share with a partner or family member. Secondly, a plaque-seeker tip with three thin tufts of bristles, which are designed to touch the teeth to gently dislodge plaque settled in crevices. This one works best for anyone with dental implants, crowns, bridges or veneers.

The key thing, as with the cheaper model, is that the Cordless Advanced does a brilliant job of cleaning while covering a range of different needs. At its lowest intensity setting, you get a gentle clean that’s good for new users or more sensitive gums, while there’s enough welly at the top setting to clean deep between your teeth and all around the gum line. It also scores extra points for bundling four tips, with the standard and orthodontic tips joined by a plaque-seeking tip for cleaning around crowns and implants, plus a tongue-cleaning tip for scraping the tongue and battling stinky breath. There’s room for improvement, but this is still a great water flosser for anyone who wants to give one a try. If this process fails to start the flow of water, insert a jet tip and gently draw on the tip as you would a drinking straw. Cleaning time We fill up the water reservoir on each flosser and time how long it takes for the tank to drain. With the unit in the OFF position, allow gravity to drain the vinegar solution through the Water Flosser. The best water flossers you can buy in 2023 1. Panasonic EW1511: Best water flosser for most people As water flossers dispense a continuous jet of water, you need to keep your mouth partially closed while running the cleaning nozzle along your gum line. This allows the water to drain out but avoids it spraying everywhere. Using a water flosser isn’t as straightforward as using an electric toothbrush and it can take a little getting used to. You start by filling the reservoir, before putting the tip of the flosser in your mouth with the nozzle pointing at your gum line. Only at this point should you switch it on and select the mode you want to use. If your tip is removable, remove the tip, set pressure control dial to high, place the handle in the sink.

The most impressive thing about this Philips is the ‘quad stream’ technology. Whereas the tip on every other water flosser I reviewed offers a straight flow of water, Philips’ quad stream head is X-shaped, to separate the flow into four water jets (as shown on the box, above). The result was a faster clean, so although the water tank isn’t wholly impressive at 250ml, I only had to refill it once to cover my whole mouth. Spotlight’s water flosser has the biggest water capacity of any I tried thanks to the 400ml reservoir. It was the only one I didn’t have to refill part-way through my clean. The modes include gentle, clean and pulse, plus a UV setting to sterilise any bacteria inside the water tank. They’re particularly useful for anyone with braces or who’s had dental work like bridges, simply because water flossers are more effective than tape at targeting those hard to reach areas. Using a water flosser to dislodge plaque from the gum line and any food particles causing discolouration can also help to whiten your teeth. Water flossers, also known as oral irrigators, are completely different from the painful, harsh and environmentally unfriendly ways of traditional flossing tape. So, what is a water flosser? Dr Khurrum Hussain, a dentist and clinical periodontist at Bupa Dental Care explains, “These devices use a steady high-pressure, or pulsating stream of water to target the areas between the teeth near the gum line.” Ordo is an eco-friendly oral hygiene company determined to keep innovative dental hygiene within your budget. Their brand new water flosser is dentist-approved and competes with higher end products in terms of features and performance.Key specs – Pressure: Not stated; Tank capacity: 250ml; Modes: 2; Tips provided: 2; Battery: Li-ion; Battery life: 14mins; Charger: USB Type-C, cable and charger provided; Dimensions: 60 x 75 x 280mm Water flossers can be an additional aid, over and above interdental cleaning, and some patients like using these.'

You should also look at the capacity of the water tank, which defines how long you can floss without a refill, and how it’s powered. Most flossers are now cordless and have a built-in lithium-ion battery, but they’ll need to be plugged in or placed on a charging cradle periodically to keep them going. This means that a battery charge indicator is another real plus. Philips has also done a great job with the practical aspects of the design. The Power Flosser 3000 charges over a standard USB-Type C port, and Philips bundles in a cable, compact charger and soft drawstring case. The main power button is big enough to find with ease when you’re rushing in the morning, and the mode and intensity buttons have simple indicators, so that you know what mode and setting you are in. The nozzle also rotates 360-degrees for easy aiming at the hard-to-reach areas of your mouth. This is one of the more expensive options, but if you have problem teeth and gums then it’s worth every penny. We choose bestselling water flossers available at UK retailers and enlist a panel of testers to try them out. Each person tests all of the water flossers and we buy all those that we test. This Binefia water flosser surprised me the most of any I tried. If I’m being completely honest, I saw the price point and the unknown brand name and made a judgement. How wrong I was. This water flosser is my best value choice on this list because it has six jet tip attachments, a 300ml water reservoir, a sturdy travel case which has compartments to hold the attachments and charger and premium-feeling metal buttons. The third type of head is an orthodontic tip, with a tapered tip to remove bacteria and food debris from around the teeth and under the gums. It’s especially effective for anyone with braces.Use a water flosser before brushing your teeth with a toothbrush and toothpaste, advises Dr Khurrum Hussain. “This allows debris to be removed from the spaces between the teeth, enabling better fluoride absorption from the toothpaste onto the enamel.” Set the Water Flosser to the highest pressure setting, and if the handle has an on/off slide switch, make sure it is in the ON position. Then point the handle downward towards the sink and turn the unit on; this generally starts the flow of water within 30 seconds. Fill reservoir at least half-full of water. Ensure the reservoir is firmly seated onto the base of the unit. Press down firmly to engage the reservoir to the base of the unit.
