The SCOTLAND YARD rule is identical in all versions. Calling "SCOTLAND YARD" directs the players to pass three cards to the player on his left. It can also be called two times in a row. Each player assumes the role of Holmes and matches wits with the other players to determine who possesses the most skilful powers of deduction. The game includes 75 cases and each case is represented by a card that features a crime told in story form, a selection of probable suspects and a list of locations involved in that crime. This process is repeated at the end of each round. With 108 cards, it can be quite a handful! It is by no means the longest setup for a game but because you have to do it 6 times it does feel like you’re shuffling for ages.

Although the original graphic from 1904 shows a player making "a sweep" of his opponents' cards, apparently this action needed to be made clearer. As well, the words "ALL PLAYERS PLAY AT ONCE" are more pronounced in the newer rules. To find clues and get closer to figuring out challenging cases, pay close attention and choose your favorite gameplay mode for any scene: The cards are colour coded to make the game easier to learn. However, this doesn’t always help. At the bottom of the cards, a selection of coloured boxes is shown to indicate which cards players can play. If you see a blue box, you assume you can play any transport card. Wrong! Depending on which location you’re in depends on the method you can use. The colour coding doesn’t tell you all this, which can cause confusion and arguments with the rule book. It’s a nifty idea to colour code the cards but just remember to read the small print. With illustrations from the original novels, this card game goes some way to evoke the feeling of the chase through Victorian London to unmask Moriarty and other villains. Players draw and lay cards in sequence, Movement, Location, Info, Action, Detectives and Villains. So I might take a train to the Country, find a clue and use a Disguise. I can use an Inspector, Arrest or Alibi card on my opponents and so on. Play ends either when an Arrest successfully reveals a Villain, or when a player discards their last card, a Villain, who Escapes. Scoring is based on cards remaining in your hand, and if you are the arresting or guilty player, caught with a Villain in your hand. Two quotes that appeared within the early Parker ads were from the Boston Herald. and the New York World. They stated: As you go round the table and play cards, you’re trying to make sure you come out with the lowest score. This means you want to play cards which have the highest score or catch the villain. If a player successfully arrests a villain, they will get the villain’s score deducted from their points and the villain will have this score added to their total. Alternatively, if the villain escapes, they will get this score deducted. All cards left in your hand at the end of a round are tallied up. Catching villains becomes a priority as arresting a villain will give you a hefty minus to your score which always helps. If you have a villain card in your hand at the end and you remained undetected, you do not add this score to your total. There are big penalties for being caught with a villain or making wrongful arrests, just as there are coveted deductions for making a successful arrest or facilitating an escaping villain. The game is best played in rounds with continuous scoring – we recommend 6!
