About this deal

It’s interesting, people come up to me and say that song’s written about me – which is nice because that’s also about me. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. Some of the topics tackled by Lucy are incredibly difficult and tend to be evaded within the media, but she’s unafraid to explore them and her transparency continues to serve her well – from ‘Cocaine’, which appears to tell the tale of a relationship breakdown due to drugs, to ‘Caroline’.

It’s one of Spraggan’s own favorites because she feels it really adds to the ongoing dialogue of body positivity – or even body neutrality. If you’ve seen Lucy perform live, you’ll know that audience participation is a huge part of her sets and it’s easy to see which tracks are going to attract those mass singalongs – two being ‘Not Another Travelling Song’ and the album’s penultimate track, ‘Manchester’. The heartfelt ‘Everything Changes’ for example sees Lucy look back on the past decade, while ‘Bodies’ reflects upon her journey of working through image issues and learning how to build a healthy relationship with her body. Lucy announced the album back in December 2022, alongside the release of its piano led title track, which boasts some of her strongest vocals yet.Lucy Spraggan treats fans to some early Christmas gifts this week, not only in the form of her latest single ‘Balance’, but also by announcing details of her forthcoming album (of the same name) and memoir, Process – both of which will be released next year!

When asked what memory or song she feels such a deep connection to, Spraggan immediately brings up Emily Sandé’s “Read All About It”, a song she had to sing during the X Factor UK. If you saw a fellow human being suffering like that in any other context, you’d say – fucking hell, that person needs help. Serving as the second track to be lifted off of her seventh studio album, the deeply personal song sees Lucy reunite with music industry icon Simon Cowell, who has signed her to his publishing company, and is an “instrumental part in the forthcoming album and campaign”. Similarly, there’s “The Cost of Living,” which she describes as “quite fun – an old school song of mine that’s more like spoken word.Because there’s one thing Spraggan is really outspoken about, and it’s the appalling way in which the music industry tends to deal with (mental) health issues. Of course, Spraggan has learned she needs to “caveat the craziness with calm,” to maintain that hard-fought sense of balance. Balance’ is Lucy Spraggan’s seventh studio album produced by Philip MaGee and released through Lucy’s own label Ctrl Records working alongside Simon Cowell’s Syco Publishing company. When I heard this song for the first time I was blown away, it is absolutely beautiful and the message is very important, especially right now. Underdog’ isn’t the only track on the album that refers to Lucy’s career and the uplifting ‘Empire’ documents her journey as a musician, touring different places and building a connection with her fans that most musicians can only dream of.
