Lt. Peterson Not Guilty Because of Insanity". The Mining Journal. Marquette, Michigan. September 23, 1952. p.1. ISSN 0898-4964. El inculpado, además de haberle metido 5 balas a otro hombre delante de muchas personas, se entregó a la policía una vez asesinado al otro hombre, así que como verán la defensa no tiene, en apariencia, mucho de donde agarrarse para lograr un veredicto a favor. His widow donated his papers to Northern Michigan University in 1992. The collection is a part of the Central Upper Peninsula and Northern Michigan University Archives and includes unpublished manuscripts, case files from his days as a lawyer, some files related to his tenure on the Michigan Supreme Court and personal correspondence. Most of his Supreme Court-related files are in the State Archives in Lansing. [11] In 1995, Voelker was posthumously inducted into the National Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame in Hayward, Wisconsin. The author, John D. Voelker, using the pen name Robert Traver, wrote this novel shortly after being defeated in his bid for re-election for district attorney of Marquette County, MI and deciding to focus on his private law practice. This novel is based on his first big case on the “flipside” of the law as defense counsel instead of prosecutor and centered on an Army lieutenant accused of murdering a well-known local innkeeper for allegedly raping his wife. Voelker employed a little-known defense tactic in his pursuit to free his client. Because of some intriguing side stories about the murderer, his wife and the victim; because a rape preceded the murder; because the setting is integral to the plot, it was all in all a satisfying read. I could see the "surprise" ending coming but the tension of the trial was good and taut. a b c Phillips, Gene D. (2012). Out of the Shadows: Expanding the Canon of Classic Film Noir. Of the many constructs that have been invented by mankind to keep society whole, I see the invention of law as being the most important. It may have started with ancient chiefs and kings dictating their personal, passionate, and biased desires for justice. From there, councils took form, which somewhat normalized its application. And finally, the law became what it is today: words on paper that intend rule society with reason. As with every evolutionary process, there were diversions along the way, but in comparing where we are to where we once were, we have achieved a path of improvement.

King, Susan (December 19, 2012). "National Film Registry Selects 25 Films for Preservation". Los Angeles Times. Anatomy of a Murder has been well received by members of the legal and educational professions. In 1989, the American Bar Association rated this as one of the 12 best trial films of all time. In addition to its plot and musical score, the article noted: "The film's real highlight is its ability to demonstrate how a legal defense is developed in a difficult case. How many trial films would dare spend so much time watching lawyers do what many lawyers do most (and enjoy least) – research?" [30] The film has also been used as a teaching tool in law schools, as it encompasses (from the defense standpoint) all of the basic stages in the U.S. criminal justice system from client interview and arraignment through trial. The film was listed as No. 4 of 25 "Greatest Legal Movies" by the American Bar Association. [31]

The AllMusic review by Bruce Eder awarded the album 3 stars and called it "a virtuoso jazz score—moody, witty, sexy, and—in its own quiet way – playful". Voelker was also appointed to the Michigan Supreme Court by Governor G. Mennen Williams in 1957. He is best known as the author of the novel Anatomy of a Murder, published in 1958. The best-selling novel was turned into an Academy Award-nominated film of the same name—directed by Otto Preminger and starring James Stewart—released on July 1, 1959. The film examines the apparent fallibility of the human factor in jurisprudence. [21] [22] In various ways all of the human components—the counsel for defense and prosecution, the defendant and his wife, and the witnesses—have their own differing positions on what is right or wrong, and varying perspectives on integrity, justice, morality and ethics. The reliance on credibility of witnesses, and the "finding of facts" based upon those determinations, is the " Achilles heel" of the judicial process. I don't know if you've heard the details, but I--I had quite an experience. I'm sure I can see you Tuesday, though--that is, if you can take the case." Striking up a friendship in the process, Voelker was profiled as a subject of an " On the Road" segment with Charles Kuralt on the CBS Evening News. Voelker took the journalist with him to his beloved pond. Kuralt regarded him as one of the most interesting subjects that he had interviewed in his career. a b Johnston, Louis; Williamson, Samuel H.
