About this deal

Stefen's Books - In 2015 Hodder released a 50th anniversary paperback edition of Dune with what I thought was a pretty cool cover. With the first Dune movie coming out next year (supposedly) I think the book will probably see a surge in sales, hopefully this at least stops someone from purchasing the Hodder Publishing version of Dune. While the first book has a good balance of action and politics, Messiah has a more slow burn political thriller as we see Paul Atritedes crowned as Emperor and his allies ruling the Imperium and dealing with the enemies. As Paul’s friends become worshippers and his family become idols, the thin line between god, liberator and oppressor is increasingly indistinct. The Frank Herbert 1965 novel also inspired the controversial 1984 film adaptation by maverick film director, David Lynch.

His current project is a reconsideration of popular fiction during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. However in the first 200 pages I am noticing various obvious mistakes in the copy and it's really irking me. Humanity has resorted to a delicately balanced feudal system of governance, each aristocratic family struggling for survival, competing for control of a decadent empire. His biography of his father, Dreamer of Dune: The Biography of Frank Herbert (2003), was a finalist for the Hugo Award.

While the planet is an inhospitable and sparsely populated desert wasteland, it is the only source of melange, or "the spice," a drug that extends life and enhances mental abilities. Combine that with the impeccable attention to detail that the Folio Society lavish on every publication they produce and you have a book to cherish. Any sort of link or text post is welcome as long as it is about printed / text / static SF material.

Decades after initial publication it is still the benchmark for popular SF, a book everyone should read, if only to know what everyone else is talking about.

Dune 50th Anniversary Edition": Commemorating the milestone of the original "Dune" novel, this special edition includes extra content, annotations, and insights from the author, Frank Herbert, providing a deeper understanding of the epic tale that started it all. Seamus Heaney’s deeply felt interpretation, widely acknowledged as the greatest Beowulf translation of modern times, is presented in parallel with the Old English verse in this fabulous Folio edition. Chemical influences are infused into the lifeblood of the Dune universe: the threat of poison hangs over every person of political influence, blades are tipped with soporifics, sapho and spice are taken by mentats, elacca is given to prisoners prior to enforced gladatorial combat, and semuta is a recreational drug taken combined with music. Arrakis, or Dune, is a planet of nothingness – its torched wastelands are home to a fierce nomadic people, and under the endless deserts stalk gargantuan sandworms the size of starships. I'm not a huge sic-fi reader but I love the universe that Herbert has created with all of the imaginative species and traits.
